Perfect 5th wedding anniversary project
For every wedding anniversary, we use the traditional list of wedding gifts to inspire a thoughtful gift. For the first anniversary, paper, there were some baseball tickets. For the second, cotton, Tom got me this great sweatshirt that he had custom-made with pictures from the wedding and honeymoon. Then there was leather and linen and this year we landed on wood.
Wood was giving me fits. I couldn’t figure out what would be meaningful and would last a while. I used to pride myself on my ability to give thoughtful gifts, but Tom seems to be the part of this team that excels in that area. We have been working on not buying stuff we don’t need and everything thing I thought of was something that would sit on the shelf and get dusty. Enter Wayfair with some Adirondack chairs that were the perfect start to an anniversary gift that won’t collect dust.
We built a fire pit in the backyard last year and we talked about getting chairs, but it was the end of the season and it just didn’t make sense for last year. We made do with some plastic knock-off Adirondack chairs that were a perfect inexpensive option but knew we wanted to upgrade at some point. Plastic chairs just didn’t go with our ultimate vision of being able to watch sports and hang out outside. We didn’t install cable and electricity at the fire pit to sit on crummy chairs. This is meant to be the place to be on nice nights.
I quickly got the idea that these 100% pine wood chairs would make the perfect 5th Anniversary gift that we could enjoy together. Bonus that they are unfinished so I would have the option to customize them and really make them fit our anniversary using our wedding colors of blue and yellow. An ode to Tom’s love of UCLA.
some assembly required
These chairs come completely unassembled, which sounds daunting but was perfect considering my painting plans. We laid the chairs out in the garage and got to work just after lunch. With two of us working we were able to get the chairs painted and assembled before dinner. Most pieces even had a second coat. We used outdoor paint to help protect them from the weather a little more. We plan to coat them with a varnish as well to give them a nice shine and even more protection.
We couldn’t be happier with how they turned out and being able to paint each board individually made the alternating pattern that much easier. We let them really dry in the garage for a few days and then took them out for their first spin around the fire pit this past Monday. Olive wasn’t as impressed with the chairs but was more than happy to be outside all night.
The chairs are so sturdy and comfortable and the biggest improvement over last year’s chairs is that the armrest can hold a phone and beverage. That makes it so much easier to sit back and relax. This really might be my favorite feature on the chairs. That being said they are extremely comfortable to sit in. You are reclined just enough and not too much that getting out the chair is a chore.
Now we can hangout from baseball season to football season with ease. If you have a wedding anniversary coming up this summer something to help you enjoy the summer patio (or firepit) weather might be just the ticket for you too. Wayfair has a lot more to offer besides the Adirondack chairs on in their patio furniture category. You could probably even find something in your wedding colors or a material that matches the traditional anniversary gift for your celebration! If you need us we’ll be at the firepit.0
