The 21 Club has abandoned it’s tie requirement according to the NY Times
article. I am bothered by this news. There should be a little spot for history and tradition. I understand that part of the reason for the decision is that they felt uncompetitive in a market that general doesn’t demand such a dress code any longer. However, it is bittersweet to see a part of history unable to maintain it’s culture. My grandfather use to eat meals at the 21 Club and many other “gentleman clubs” before that term referred to a strip club. The 21 Club opened in the wee hours straddling 1929 and 1930. It started out as a speakeasy and the name was based on the address 21 West 52nd street. With regulars like Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Ernest Hemingway, Alfred Hitchcock this bar has certainly earned it’s place in the lore of New York. So it would be nice for it to be able to keeps it’s traditions.
I just don’t like seeing change with things I hold in fond memory. The memories of stories about my grandfather taking the train to work from Connecticut to new york. How he drank and played cards with his commuting buddies on the way home. Stories about he had scotch at lunch while making deals at the 21 Club. I have never been but have always wanted to go because it seemed like a way to connect to a man I didn’t have a chance to really get to know.
The 21 Club will celebrate it’s 80th anniversary on Dec 31st. I hope that all the guests on that night, at least, wear ties.
