Few things in the food world intimidate me, but juicing wins a spot at the top of that list. People that juice and get juicing speak with such a passion I am sure I always feel unsure asking questions. Venturing into a juice bar makes me feel as unsure as I did walking into my first tattoo parlor. I was certain they would see me as someone who didn’t fit their culture and beliefs. As was true with the tattoo parlor, the juice community has no opinions of me and my lack of knowledge about juicing.

I walked in to my first juice store, Natural Born Juicers in Indianapolis, apprehensive and overwhelmed by the large chalkboard filled with various juices, smoothies and blended juices.

My husband and I just moved to Indianapolis from San Francisco. As we were getting ready to move I started checking on some of the new eateries, including food trucks, which is how I stumbled on to Natural Born Juicers.

Originally starting as a food truck this company grew in popularity which allowed them to open the brick and mortar operation in the popular Mass Ave area. They still run the food truck, but that visit will have to wait for warmer weather.

I couldn’t have picked a better place for my first juice experience. The staff at Natural Born Juicers were helpful, politely answered my questions, and gave me some suggestions as a newbie.

I have developed quite a fascination and taste for the combination of chocolate and cayenne. Not sure what the appeal is but I love it so much I can hardly turn it down. Before visiting I started following the store on instagram and after I saw a listing of some of their new hot drinks I knew I had to try one of them. Not exactly a juice, but it is made with the same quality ingredients they use in every product they make. The hot cacao is made with maple syrup, cinnamon, cacao, cayenne, coconut oil, and almond milk. It was delicious! I will be back this winter for more of this tasty drink.

My favorite fun fact I learned, which may be old knowledge to some, is that cayenne, turmeric and cinnamon are anti-inflammatories. This makes them great during colds and sinus infections. If you really want to help your cold try their ginger lemon cayenne shot. I got brave and asked why that combination and she told me the cayenne is the anti-inflammatory and the ginger helps with digestion so the combination helps move the congestion down and out.

For my other drinks I ordered a juice and a blended juice. The juice is just what it sounds like it is fresh pressed juice. The blended juice they describe as a smoothie/juice hybrid, fresh juice blended with frozen fruit. Both of my selections were based on the recommendation of the two employees that helped me.

My juice was a Multivitamin Juice which is carrot, apple and orange. The color was amazing. I was kind of hesitant about this one because I really dislike carrot juice. Which is strange given my love of carrots, but I loved it and now believe I had just never had really fresh carrot juice before.

For my blended juice, I had the Refresher, Pineapple blended with apple, cucumber, ginger, lemon & mint. I think this was my favorite of the three. I loved the hot drink, but the Refresher will keep my coming back. All the flavors complimented each other perfectly, and I especially liked the ginger and mint flavors. It was great on a cold day and it is going to taste even better while I shop Mass Ave on a hot day this summer.

Natural Born Juicers has even more to offer than just a walk-in juice bar. If you are taking your resolution to get healthy serious you can consider booking a juice cleanse. They even offer a beginning cleanse for people who are just starting out. You get all the juices you need for a 3 day cleanse. I loved how helpful and attentive the staff is here. I did a little ear-hustling, or eavesdropping, and was impressed with the attention they paid to every customers questions and comments.
