baker’s dozen food podcasts

June 15, 2016 by anne

I love podcasts. I especially love food podcasts.

When I was in high school or college my mom found NPR. She used to only listen to NPR in the car. I thought she was so out of date and boring. So last year when I started relying on NPR to get me from home to work I had to eat a bit of crow. NPR was a good option, but sometimes it can get overrun with the same news topic in a day or have shows that just don’t interest me and that can get a little boring.

Which brought me to podcasts. It is like being program manager of your own public radio station. My station only talks about food at the moment. There are two inspirational podcasts that get thrown in but largely it is about food. Now that I have a car that automatically connects to my phone and plays the podcasts, my drive to and from work are my favorite parts of the day.

10 ideas for picky eaters

“I don’t think you are going to like it.” she tells her toddler as they walk through the store and stop at the sample station.

The woman working behind the sample counter makes an effort to save the situation.

“If you try it and don’t like it you can always spit it out, but you won’t know if you like it unless you try it.”

“Would you like to try it?” asks his mom.

Problem is at this point everyone knows what the answer is going to be.

learning to budget and meal plan

June 7, 2016 by anne

With the certainty that, at some point, we will be a house of 3 I have started cutting costs and budgeting whatever I can. The phone plan got slashed, we got a cheaper car and I am working on the grocery budget. Being a big fan of food that grocery budget part has been the hardest.
Cooking isn’t only a necessity it is also my hobby. So while I could slash the grocery budget even lower than the $500 a month I plan it starts to take a little of the fun out of cooking for me. I need the wiggle room to try new recipes and ingredients.
I have been working on menu planning and food budgets from the last few months. I still haven’t completely found a groove, but it has been improved and we are more on track with what we spend. My biggest problem so far is setting aside the time for planning. Which means some weeks I am doing it in a rush and throwing it together just as I am making my grocery list. I feel like is leading to a lot of repeat meals and spending more than I even need to. What follows is two weeks of my attempt to track everything in our food budget.

Wayfair’s Simply Summer cookbook

Wayfair’s Simply Summer cookbook

Exciting news, I am in my first cookbook a summer cookbook. Do you remember the cookbooks that schools and churches used to put together as a fundraiser? You know all the Bettys and Marys gave their recipes for pies and casseroles and some sweet soul typed them, on a typewriter, had them bound and sold them to raise money for the new playground. I might have just dated myself, especially with the typewriter comment. Regardless this cookbook is kind of like that except it is free!
