One of the best things we can do to create a compassionate society is to get to know people who aren’t exactly like us. Your neighbors are likely a good place to find those people. Unlike your church groups, school groups or work groups you are less likely to have an obvious unifying topic. The only thing that unites you is you liked the same neighborhood or apartment complex.
There are so many benefits to knowing your neighbors. When you go out of town they will keep an eye on your house. When you need a cup of sugar to bake some more cookies they might just be there to help out. You don’t have to become their best friends, but knowing who they are and creating a connection with them might make all the difference some day.
