5 Ways to expand what you eat

Before you try to go all healthy, organic or local with your grocery shopping take a few steps to expand your choices than limit them.

If you are one of those people who go all in are über vigilant with new goals and never waver in your conviction than please change all your eating habits at once and be the healthiest most envied person in the room. For the rest of us, there is an easier way.

Start in the kiddie pool

When you learned to swim you likely didn’t jump in the deep end and flail around until you figured it out. That would have likely lead to a lifeguard rescue. If you have tried changing all you eating habits at once and flailed around, let me be your lifeguard. For those of you reading this saying, “I never learned to swim” I am guessing you get the point. Learning new eating habits isn’t any different.

Changing your eating habits shouldn’t be painful or life threatening. Unfortunately, it has the possibility to be both. So before you go all fad diet let’s try another option. Let’s try adding more foods to our diets without cutting out the current favorites. Give ourselves time to develop new favorites and then slowly cut out the old ones.

5 Ways to expand what you eat

You can do all 5 of this ideas without drastically overhauling your eating habits from day one. As you expand what you like and will eat you can up your game. You may even find that your habits start to naturally change because you find new alternatives are better than what you had been eating and you never turn back.

don’t cut things out completely

Instead of going straight from the sugary fruit on the bottom yogurts to greek yogurt with berries and granola do both. Not in the same day, but in the same week. Opening up the variety can help you develop a taste for the less sugary yogurt.

try two new veggies or fruits a week

Just two. Get recommendations from friends of their favorite fruit or veggie and ideas on how to prepare them. If you have friends that love to cook, you have friends that love to share recipes. Use that resource to help broaden your horizons and make the produce section a little less intimidating.

try one snack replacement a week

If you are a twinkies and ho-ho person tossing those out and eating rice cakes probably sounds horrible. What about 1 day out of 7 you eat nuts and dried fruit instead? It is an attainable goal and as you find snacks you like you can eliminate the twinkies and ho-hos.

try two new recipes a month

The goal here should be to make sure they are healthier options than the recipe you are replacing. This isn’t where you troll Pinterest for the most mouth-watering thing you can find. Look for recipes with new ingredients or new skills. Most likely what you make will still be edible and two nights a month is a pretty low risk for the potential payoff.

shop at a farmers market or new grocery store once a month

Getting out of the same store you always shop at can help break impulse buys and change habits. Shopping at new places will naturally expand the items you buy.

Audrey of Ezra’s Enlightened Cafe

Today’s episode is with Audrey Barron of Ezra’s Enlightened Cafe.

A city in the midwest can be a tough place to find a restaurant if vegan food is what you are looking for. Audrey filled that gap with Ezra’s Enlightened Cafe. She offers good food and classes to help you change your eating habits and get more of a plant-based diet into your routine.

She was even recently seen on The Cooking Channel show, Cheap Eats. It is always fun to see Indianapolis featured in the national spotlight and it was a real pleasure to see Ezra’s because it isn’t what people outside of Indy would expect to find.

Even if you live in Indy you might not know about Ezra’s yet. I hope this episode gives you a good reason to go check them out.

Buying local groceries in Indianapolis

Local food has been playing a key role in many communities for years now. This isn’t so much a new concept, and it is really picking up steam in Indianapolis. As you get started learning more about where your food comes from and how it is grown finding local stories with a friendly staff that can answer your questions will be a huge help.

The list of resources below will help get you started. It is not exhaustive, though I am happy to add to it if I missed a good one. Step into any one of these stores and you will probably find someone happy to help answer questions. If you can’t find what you are looking for there they may be able to get you in the right direction. Same goes for the farmers you will meet at the farmers markets.

A big part of shopping local is about becoming part of the community and learning more about the people who make your food. These people are all very passionate about this and would love to talk to you about it so don’t hesitate to ask and get involved.

Why you should by local

  • fresher produce
  • money stays in your local economy instead of the coffers of the humongous grocery store
  • you can ask how it was grown or prepared
  • your kids, if you have them, get to learn more about where their food comes from
  • you are creating a community

Where to find local food

One of the best places to buy local is from Farmers Markets. You can cut out the middleman and go straight to the grower which means they get all the money and you get the product at a better cost. Most importantly though it means you get the freshest produce possible. It is likely that what you buy at the market was picked just a day or two before. This is important because ones something is picked it starts loosing flavor. Waiting for that corn to show up at the grocery store means it has zero chance of tasting as good as the corn you get direct from a farmer.

One of the best places to find local food is a farmer’s market. If you are lucky to live in a mild climate you probably have a large variety of markets all year round.

Small independent grocers - even though everything on the shelf might not be local you are still supporting a local spot instead of a big business.

direct from makers - as you start going to local stores, farmers markets, and restaurants that support local you will start seeing products made by local people. Sometimes they sell their products directly to customers via a website or their own store front.

Where to buy local food in Indianapolis specifically

Resources

Slow food indy snail of approval - this list is compiled yearly to keep it up to date. There are a few criteria to be on this list, but one of them is to source local products. So if you find something on this list you can feel good about the impact you are having on local food and the Indianapolis and greater Indiana economy.

Indy local food guide - this is put out by the Hoosier Farmers Market Association. They do a great job of identifying not only all the farmers markets, but also restaurants, local makers, local farmers and more to help you shop local.

Online

Green Bean Delivery - This company is headquartered in Indianapolis, though they currently deliver and farm in other states in the midwest, and offers delivery of local produce, meat, and groceries. Not everything you find one the site will be local, but it will tell you where it comes from so you can make a better decision.

Farmers Market.com - This is one of two option in the Indianapolis area to shop an online farmers market. If you are a listener of the podcast you might remember that this is one of the ways you can buy bread from Hayley at Native Bread. How this works is you shop online and get your orders in and select your pick up location by the Tuesday deadline. One Wednesday the growers and makers deliver the items you order to your pick up location. On Thursday you stop by and pick up your order. An easier way to get to the farmers market, if like me you work on Saturday mornings.

Hoosier Harvest Market - This is option two to purchase online from local growers and producers. They also have pickup locations in Indianapolis and surrounding areas. I believe their deadline is Wednesday at Noon, but please check to make sure that hasn’t changed since the writing of this article.

Tyner Pond Farm - Want an easy way to get quality local meat? This farm allows you to shop their online store and then have it delivered to your house. You can also have it saved at a store and pick it up there. Your meat will arrive frozen, on your doorstep as soon as the next day.

These stores

There is a growing collection of local markets where you can do some of your grocery shopping. Some of these spots are big enough that you can do most of you shopping with them. Not everything in their walls will be from local growers, producers or artisans, but it is a better place to start looking and you can support a local business while you are doing it.

5 steps to changing grocery shopping habits

If your new year’s resolution is to lose weight or get healthy the first place you should start making changes is the grocery store.

Changing grocery shopping habits isn’t any easy task. Most of us walk in and do the task on autopilot. No list, no plan, and no budget. What ends up in the cart is a variety of easy to put on the table dinners and lunches, a host of snacks and whatever the kids are willing to eat. If you are like me, on the weeks I don’t plan our meals, you shop every few days and spend more than you ever intended and eat food you never intended.

There are probably many reasons for this that range from comfort to easy. Not to mention the grocery store has become a place filled with so many products it could take hours to navigate. Add in that it has quickly become a dreaded chore in our culture and it is no surprise we as a country eat so much processed food. Even after processed food has been shown study after study to be a leading cause of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

The first key to any diet change is a change in shopping habits at the grocery store. Here are 5 easy steps to help you get started.

5 easy steps to grocery shopping success

Plan before you go

There is no step more important to changing your grocery buying habits than making a plan before you go to the store. Walking into the grocery store without a plan is like walking into Target without a mission. You are coming out with a whole lot more than you bargained for.

With a plan of the meals you want to cook, even just a loose plan, you will come out with what you need for the week and minimal add-ons. If the unhealthy food doesn’t make it into the cart it can’t make it into your house which means it won’t be eaten by you. Don’t believe the hype

All those claims and labels on the box aren’t there to help you make healthy choices. They are there to make you spend money. 99.9% of them are marketing ploys to get you to buy. While my percentage isn’t scientifically proven and was chosen purely to make my point, it is likely not that far off. After over 12 years working in grocery stores, I have some insight in this.

In case you haven’t heard yet, fat-free doesn’t equal healthy. It can actually be quite the opposite. Unless you are talking about a fat-free vegetable, fat-free probably means add sugar and salt. So most things with fat-free in the label are just marketing. Those labels are not your friend. Don’t believe the hype.

Keep to the edges

You want the healthy food, stay to the edges of the store for all your grocery needs. Every store is laid out in a very similar way. Refrigerated perishable products up front and around the edges. Canned goods and pantry staples are either on the same aisle or in adjoining aisles. This tip just saved you so much time. Now there is less store you even need to cover!

Have you noticed that produce is always the first section in a store? This isn’t by accident. Nothing in a grocery store is by accident. The produce is upfront and center because out of all the products in the store it is the most appealing. The section that makes you come in for more because all the vibrant colors draw you in and make you want to shop.

So there are probably some items you will need in the aisles, but with the plan you made before you got to the store (see the first step) you should be able to get in and out of those aisles with only the items you came for right?

Review your receipts

Tracking your purchases and the money spent is a huge step to changing what you buy. Keep an eye on your receipts and notice where the majority of your money is going. Some of the big stores even break it down for you. If the majority of your shopping didn’t come from produce, this includes frozen vegetables, add more to your plan for next week. What we track we change. If you don’t pay attention to your habits changing them will be that much harder.

Making your resolution a success

You have already made the decision to be healthier and that in itself it a huge step. Following through with good food choices is the key to making this plan a success. What you choose to eat is the most important decision you make on a daily basis. If that is the most important decision then what you put in your grocery cart, to in turn put in your cupboards, is high up there in importance as well. Before your next trip to the store make a plan, don’t fall for the marketing, stick to the edges of the store and track your purchases and you will be on the way to grocery shopping that matches your goal of being healthy.

This is a great episode and Laura really was the perfect person to kick off the new season and the new year. We talked a lot about starting habits, learning to pay attention and listen to yourself (aka mindfulness) and giving yourself grace as you travel this journey.

I respect Laura so much and in the two years that I have known her have learned a lot. Every time I have talked to her I have come away from inspired. What I love most about her approach to leading a healthy lifestyle and developing mindfulness is that she is honest about not being perfect at it herself. You will even hear her admit that in this episode.

A preview of season 2

New season, a new logo and a new design

New Season

I have been busy behind the scenes preparing for the start of season 2. Lining up great guests, getting a jump on recording and writing some companion content for some of the episodes. It is shaping up to be a great season.

I am, however, a little late getting this little preview together since season 2 start tomorrow! So squeezing this in under the wire here are some of the exciting guests I already have lined up for you this season.

To kick it all off is Laura Henderson, co-founder of Growing Places. I can’t wait for you to hear this episode. There were some great moments. Laura seems to inspire me every time we cross paths so it was joy getting to talk to here for this episode.

New Logo

I started the podcast quickly, because I do best with the rip the band-aid off method, just go for it and figure it out as you go. That meant the previous logo was something I threw together quickly. We will call the new one a Christmas present. When I was in Florida for my mom’s birthday/family Christmas I asked my brothers opinion about the logo. That turned into him making the new logo. Kid a genius with some design programs. I may be biased, and at our ages, I should probably stop referring to him as kid, but it is doubtful that will happen.

New Design

My excitement from last season also led me to create a new web design. Wanted to not only look my best for you all but also to make this a much more user-friendly site. I am not quite done so bear with me as I rearrange and play with how the home page looks. I am taking suggestions so if there is an order to things you would like to see just holler. I picked this new design because it is going allow me to create a recipe page that is searchable. I am hoping to add some new recipes so this was a big selling point. To start with most of the content is going to be about shopping, learning about food and how to navigate the marketing thrown at you at every turn as I work on developing new recipes and shining up the old posts with favorites.

I am looking forward to seeing what this season and this year brings. Thanks for tagging along.
